Being completely touch-screen gadgets, iPhone, iPad and iPhone 4 have changed the world’s mind about how to play games. It took some time for us to get used playing games and using different interactive applications touching the screen with our fingers, but now billions of people will call this the handiest way to do anything with your smartphone.
So what about games for iPhone and iPad? The first thing one may think about when deciding on the way controls will be performed, is placing joystick on the screen of the device. Consequently, this will make any game for iOS look just like any game for any push-button phone. The only difference is that you do not push the buttons on the keyboard, but poke them on the screen.
Many games for iPhone and iPad are done this way. We do not really think it is good. First, just because the screen is so flawless and flat, it is very easy to mishit the right button. Such controls require too much attention to joystick and distract players from the game itself. Second, it is not a secret that touch-screen devices often have certain problems with response time, and iPhone is not an exception. When playing a game, especially an exciting one, even a split second counts, and it is unacceptable if the response time is not instant. So we think it is better to make any game for iPhone or iPad in such a way that users can play them with two fingers only. The simpler game controls are, the better. There are so many ways to make any game easy and joyful to play, so why reduce them to a boring and already an old hat joystick?
